A moderate run and my playlist!

July 31, 2013

Happy Moderate Run Wednesday! Yeah I just made that up. This morning I was so tired when my alarm went off I stayed in bed ten more minutes. Finally I decided I was already awake and sleeping longer wouldn't help me run twenty six miles so I got up, put on my running clothes and a baseball cap, and left the house. Usually when I am tired my runs are slower than they are when I wake up and am ready for the day so I came to terms with taking my 50 minute run a little easier. Then I started picking up my pace and ended with an 8:32 average pace!  Having a good, strong run makes me happy. Betty Crocker's triple chunk brownies also make me happy. I had a million errands to run today. Or two. I just had two errands. Then spent my afternoon at home relaxing and brownie making.

Mile 1 --  9:05
Mile 2 -- 8:57
Mile 3 -- 8:45
Mile 4 -- 8:37
Mile 5 to 5.86 -- 8:32

I have had a few people ask about my running music. I have too many songs so here are my top 20 favorites that are worth noting. If you're like me and can't stand profanity there are clean versions to a couple of these songs that you can buy.

Radioactive- Imagine Dragons
Wide Awake- Katy Perry
Just Give Me A Reason- Pink
Mirrors- Justin Timberlake
Love Somebody- Maroon 5
Hot N Cold - Katy Perry
Burn- Ellie Goulding
Firework- Katy Perry
Treasure- Bruno Mars
Domino- Jessie J
Clarity- Zedd feat. Foxes
E.T. - Katy Perry
Va Va Voom - Nicki Minaj
I Need Your Love- Calvin Harris Feat. Ellie Goulding
Sweet Nothing- Calvin Harris Feat. Florence Welch
My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark- Fall Out Boy
I Want Crazy- Hunter Hayes
Can't Hold Us - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Oh No! - Marina and The Diamonds
C'mon- Kesha

A to Z

Hello! A few weeks ago I was reading a couple different running bloggers who were posting an A to Z description of themselves. I thought it was a great way to get to know the blogger more so I decided to do one for myself. I'm not sure who came up with this first so I can't credit anyone but if you write an A to Z post, comment and leave your blog link below so I can learn more about you. Enjoy!

A to Z

A. Attached or single?

B. Best friend?
My younger sister, Kathleen. I have my share of friends from my high school and college but I think Kathleen would agree with me on this one. We are literally always together since we live in the same house and all. When I need to talk (no matter how dumb what I have to say is) she listens. When I get in a mood where I don't want to share my clothes she doesn't get mad at me for being selfish. I have had a few friends get upset because I don't hang out over the weekends with them because I am busy with training or work or am just too tired but I can probably say Kathleen is my only friend who understands what training for a marathon is really like. When I have to run errands she wants to come with me so we can hang out. When my day is rough and I want to be alone she just hugs me and leaves me alone.  I love her dearly. I can't imagine life without having her constantly around!

C. Cake or pie?
That's easy. Cake. Oh but I forgot about Oreo pie. Can I pick both?

D. Day of choice?
     Saturday- it's long run day!

E. Essential item?
I never leave the house without my Michael Kors bag. I literally take my room and the kitchen cabinet with me in that bag.

F. Favorite color?

G. Gummy bears or worms?

H. Home town?
     Not telling.

I. Favorite indulgence?
    Ice cream. Shopping. Manicures.

J. January or July?
    July. Sweet summer time.

K. Kids?
     Oh heck no.

L. Life isn’t complete without?
God, family, friends, a good summer read, and laughing.
M. Marriage date?
      Not applicable.

N. Number of brothers/sisters?
     3 sisters, 1 brother-in-law.

O. Oranges or Apples?

P. Phobias?
    Roller coasters.

Q. Quotes?
"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone." -Audrey Hepburn

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  Philippians 4:13

"Be strong, you never know who you are inspiring"

R. Reasons to smile?
Are there reasons not to smile? My relationship with God, my family, my job [I'm a nanny], my friends, the college and the Bible study I attend [FCA], my guinea pig, the smell of new running shoes, sunshine, ice cream, running, blogging about running, my health, new clothes from Anthropologie and Lululemon, a clean room, playing flute in the orchestra at my church, racing 13.1....

S. Season of choice?

T. Tag 5 People.
No, thank you. But I will tag Brittany,  Madelynne, and Anna because I think they will enjoy doing this :)

U. Unknown fact about me?
Maybe I shouldn't admit this... I'm OCD and love having my room organized and cleaned.

V. Vegetable?

W. Worst habit?
Buying too much stuff when I go shopping. But I kinda like my habit.

X. X-Ray or ultrasound?
     Excuse me?

Y. Your favorite food?

Z. Zodiac sign?
    Wait, what?

So far so good but incomplete.

July 30, 2013

I didn't forget about my blog, I promise!

These past few days of nannying have been so fun but also tiring. By the time 8pm came around I was too tired to write up a blog post. This weeks training, even if it has only been two days, can be described as that saying. So far it has been good, but it is incomplete.

On Monday I had a 45 minute run so I got up early and ran that.

Today was cross training. My sister and I went to the gym so she could swim laps while I went to hot vinyasa yoga. I haven't been to yoga in awhile but I want to go more often! It was so good. Rather than a relaxing yoga class this was a bit harder class. We went through a bunch of poses that I don't know the names of and did a few strengthening moves such as ab work and push ups. All while pouring sweat.

Afterwards my sister and I got turkey avocado sandwiches and mocha madness smoothies for dinner.

I have decided that after each month of training if I get all the workouts done I will treat myself to something special. This month was..... A SHOPPING SPREE! I am obsessed with shopping. My favorite store, Anthropologie, recently had a huge sale so I bought a few tops from there and a couple pairs of sandals. I love good sales and sweet finds!

Rock 'N' Roll Marathon: Week Four

July 27, 2013

Good morning! Remember when my Garmin strap broke? The replacement band came in the mailbox the other day so my watch is fixed! Despite a little soreness, my training this week was great. I finished my long run this morning and now am off to go nanny for four days. Luckily I have some help from my family so I can get my workouts done. I closed out the week with 19.98 miles of running. No, I don't round up ;) Here is a quick recap of my workouts this past week. Have a great weekend!

Sunday: rest day
     am: 40 minute run// 9.46 pace// 4.18 miles
pm: weights class at the gym// 50 mins + core class// 30 mins
Tuesday: cross training// Body Beast: Bulk Legs// 40 mins
Wednesday: 50 minute run// 9.08 pace// 5.47 miles

What's in your gym bag?

July 25, 2013

Hi everyone! My sister and I went to the gym together so I could do my cross training of swimming laps while she ran the treadmill. When I got out to the pool all the lanes were filled.

There are ten lanes at the gym- five indoor and five outdoor. I checked the outdoor lanes. Nope, swim tests full of five years olds were going on. Okay, back indoors. Again, lanes were full.

Everyone and their moms were swimming laps including the walkers who walk for days back and forth in the lanes, the backstrokers who seem to be going slower with every stroke they take, the "I-see-you-obviously-waiting-for-a-lane-but-I'm-going-to-be-a-jerk-and-take-the-first-open-laners", and then a couple of swimmers who were actually swimming laps. So I waited. And waited. For twenty minutes.

Finally I got a lane and did my swim workout.

200m warm up

5x 50m swim

4x 100m swim

200m warm down

I was reading this girl's blog the other week and she wrote on the topic "what's in your gym bag?" I loved the idea so I decided today I would do a post about what I take to the gym. I got my gym bag from Target about a year ago and absolutely love it. Similar here. It is made by Gaiam which also sells a bunch of yoga equipment and other bags. The bag I have has two side pockets, two outer pockets, three inside pockets, and a yoga mat carrier on the bottom. It fits literally everything and is my favorite bag!

1. Workout gear: two swim caps, a ziplock bag of my swim workout, and my goggles. I always keep these in my bag even if I don't swim that day.

2. Wallet: Of course. How else would I charge $70 worth of smoothies over a two week time period with my gym pass? Sorry dad...

3. Sunglass case: I love my Oakleys that I got for my birthday! I want to keep them protected while I workout so I keep them in the case when they aren't on my face.

4. Keys: Yeah, I drove myself to the gym.

5. Sunglasses: Oh look there they are. And not in the case. Oops.

6. Bag of essentials: This includes random items that aren't so essential such as: a Lululemon towel, Clif bar, a water bottle, bandaids, sunscreen, an eyelash curler, teeth whitening strips... maybe I should clean that out.

So there you have a glimpse into my gym bag. What's in your bag?

Never give up on a dream...

July 24, 2013

Today is marathon training day 24. I can't believe July is almost over! This morning I had a 50 minute "moderate" run to do. My sister and I had planned on driving to a near hilly area/park to run in but we decided to run our normal loop. We started off the first two and a half miles at an 8:37 pace but my legs are super sore from the weights I did Monday and Tuesday so I slowed down to an 8:50. I didn't want to push myself too much because my weekly runs are about finishing the time given for that day not pace so I slowed down to a little over 9 minute pace per mile.
I came across this motivational poster on Pinterest and loved it so I will share the motivation with you.

And now for a recipe! A few weeks ago my family and I made this Spinach Manicotti and it quickly became my favorite dinner recipe. It takes a little while to make so make ahead!

  • Ricotta cheese - 15oz
  • Frozen chopped spinach -10oz thaw and drain dry
  • Shredded mozzarella - 1.5 cups
  • Shredded parmesan cheese - 3/4 cup
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 jars (approximately 28oz each) pasta sauce (we homemake ours)
  • 1.5 cups of water (add 1/2 at a time)
  • 1 package of manicotti shells

In a large bowl combine: ricotta, spinach, 1 cup mozzarella, 1/4 cup of the parmesan, egg, parsley, onion powder, pepper, and garlic powder. Combine pasta sauce and water. Spread 1 cup sauce in an ungreased 9x13 inch baking dish. Stuff uncooked manicotti shells with spinach mixture- arrange over sauce. Pour remaining sauce over manicotti. Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella and parmesan. Cover and refrigerate or freeze for later. Remove 30 minutes before baking. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until heated thoroughly. Enjoy!

Cross Training Times 2

July 23, 2013

Yesterday morning I did my 40 minute run and in the late afternoon my mom and sister wanted to go to a class at the gym so I decided to tag along. We went to a 50/50 class which is half cardio, half weights for an hour. My other sister met us after that class for a thirty minute core class. The core class was ridiculous. We used a fitness ball for most of the core work. In one exercise we had to plank and keep our feet on the ball but instead of feeling the workout I was slipping off of it. I looked up and saw my sister roll off her fitness ball and the girl next to us lost hers which I couldn't stop laughing about. Laughing is a core workout, right? These are a few examples of fitness ball exercises that we worked on:

I am sure the fitness ball can be a great core workout but I prefer my usual planks, crunches, and sit ups. All pictures above are from Google.

Moving on.

Today was cross training. I followed the Body Beast: Bulk Legs video sequence. It was a sweaty mess and I definitely felt the burn!

Vitamins and More!

July 22, 2013

Hello readers! I had a request last week to review the products that my sister's friend, Nicole, gave our family to try so here it is. I was not paid or endorsed in any way for this blog post, all information is my opinion only. Nicole gave my family four containers of vitamins called: TrueRepair, TrueRenew, TrueBasics for Women, and TrueBasics A/O. She also gave us a paper that has what each vitamin is specified for. There is a ton of information on the paper but I am only listing what the vitamin is and the benefits of each packet.

"TrueRepair is specifically formulated to provide therapeutic anti-inflammatory relief and complete antioxidant protection. This formula also contains ingredients to stimulate the production of collagen important for healthy skin, joints, and muscles."

There are many benefits listed, to name just a few:

  • Anti-aging benefits
  • Arthritis support and joint health
  • Sports performance
  • Alzheimer's disease prevention
  • Improvement of skin conditions and wrinkling
  • Immune support
  • Support of healthy muscle tissue and exercise recovery

"TrueRenew contains a synergistic blend of ingredients to aid tissue repair and healing after workouts, surgery, illness or other physically challenging conditions. It also includes ingredients with potent anti-aging benefits."

A few of the benefits listed:

  • Immune support
  • Exercise support
  • Improved sleep
  • Calming mental function and stress support
  • Improved lean body mass and muscle recovery
  • Surgery preparation and recovery
  • Weight loss (especially abdominal fat because of growth hormone stimulation)
  • Anti-aging benefits

TrueBasics for Women:

"TrueBasics for Women contains the following five vitamin components conveniently contained in an easy-to-use package:

> 2 award- winning professional quality and strength multivitamins
> 1 capsule of fish oil
> 1 vitamin E capsule (in the best form of mixed tocopherols)
> 2 highly absorbable calcium and magnesium capsules
> 1 capsule containing a combination of vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin B6"

The benefits of this packet are:
  • General health and wellness
  • Antioxidant protection
  • Inflammation control

The TrueBasics A/O is for my dad and it has similar ingredients but not exactly the same. It has similar benefits of: general health and wellness, anti- aging, and antioxidant protection. Men and women can both take this.

And lastly....

"TrueStrength is a highly absorbable, great tasting protein supplement to enhance muscle recovery and repair, improve body composition and overall health."

The benefits are:
  • Can improve muscle recovery
  • Assists with the building of lean muscle
  • Promotes the loss of body fat
  • Can improve immune function
  • Improves body composition
  • Increases antioxidants in the body

So far I have tried out the TrueStrength protein powder and the TrueRenew and like them both. The only vitamins I have taken are the gummy bears so I can tell the difference in how these are working, haha. For more information you can search the website here or email me at slaralynn6@yahoo.com and I can send you Nicole's information.

Weekend Favorites and Today's Run

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend. It went too fast in my opinion! My weekend was filled with mostly family time which is my favorite. Friday night my best friend Morgan, who I wrote about here, and I went out to get dinner and see Despicable Me 2 which was so cute and funny. I did my long run on Saturday morning, my family did yard work, then spent the afternoon in the pool. Later we went to church, out to eat, and to run some errands. Which included reading the latest InStyle magazine on one of the "for sale" couches at Sam's.

As seen on Instagram

On Sunday I went to babysit for a few hours then relaxed at home the rest of the afternoon. No workout on Sunday, it was a rest day. Apparently it was national ice cream day. Good thing I eat it every day or I may have missed it...

The photo is from Pinterest. I could never take that good of a picture without eating it all first.

Today marks week four of marathon training! The schedule called for a 40 minute easy, recovery run which I ran this morning. Afterwards, I mixed the protein powder to drink that my younger sister's friend gave us to sample. I will post later today more about the different vitamins/powder. My dad asked what I ran then told me I was "dedicated." Why yes, yes I am.

Have a great Monday!

Rock 'N' Roll Marathon: Week Three

July 20, 2013

Week three is finished and over and done and... you get it. This week ended better than it started! Here are my workouts for the week:

Sunday: Rest day
Monday: 40 minute easy run// 4.09 miles// 9.46 pace
Tuesday: Cross training// Indoor bike for 40mins
Wednesday: 45 minute moderate run// 5.16 miles// 8.43 pace
Thursday: Cross training// FIT class for 60mins
Friday: 30 minute easy run// 3.22 miles// 9.19 pace
Saturday: 7 mile long run// 9.18 pace

I closed out this week with 19.47 miles of running. I felt really strong during this morning's long run. Maybe last night's Alamo Cafe secretly helped me? I usually eat a bar before I run but didn't wake up hungry as I normally do so I decided not to eat this time. I took energy chews instead. Today I tried out the Gatorade Prime Energy Chews in cool blue which I loved! The flavor is great and the texture feels like swedish fish. The only problems are that they dyed my tongue blue and they are a little tricky getting out of the wrapper. I took two and put them in my pocket before the run. For my older sister who is training for a half ironman and cycles for two hours or others who take the wrapper with them I would say open the packet before you train or even put them in a ziplock bag. And as long as I am running, I don't mind if my tongue is blue. It was my first time trying them out so I only bought one packet of them. Overall I like them- I need more!

Have a great weekend!

My breakfast and an easy run

July 19, 2013

Happy Friday! I slept in until 8 so I decided to eat breakfast and go on a run later. This morning my mom made gluten free blueberry muffins for us. I have been taking a break from coffee this week and have been feeling so much better! I had been drinking coffee two times a week for the past few months so I have no idea why it all of a sudden made me feel nauseous and gave me a headache but I cut it out so fast I am not looking back.

Today was a 30 to 40 minute easy run, I ran for 30 minutes. Later on in training there is no choice of 30- 40 minutes [it is only 40 minutes] so I am taking the 30 minute run while it lasts. After the run we were sweaty and gross. My sister and I tried taking a selfie to put on the blog but were sweating sunscreen so I will spare you the pictures this time..

One of my younger sisters friend sells vitamins/protein powder and she gave us a few sample packets to try. We tried the protein powder after the run and it was great! This time we mixed it in with milk but next time we may mix it in yogurt or a smoothie. There are different vitamins she suggested for me during marathon training that help with muscle support, muscle repair and renew that I am trying out later today. I will post more about it soon.

Have a great Friday!

Five on Friday

I love the idea of the five on Friday link ups but have never done it myself. Today I decided to go for it. Here is a list of five things that are making me happy this week:

1. Sisters
I love my sisters a whole lot. These two right here make me so happy. My younger sister, Kathleen, is always here for me. On good days or bad days she is always by my side. I love her so! My older sister, Anna, is also in training [but for a half ironman] and I love that if I am having a bad training day or if I need help with what cross training I should do she gives me the advice I need. I can call her any time and she will listen to me. I love you Anna!

2. The outdoors
I spend most of my time outside whether it is going for a long run, taking a walk, or playing outside with the kids I nanny. I love being outside!

3. My running shoes
Of course my running shoes, I spend hours a week with them. Mizunos are the bomb.com

4. Dressing Up
Occasionally on Instagram I will post an OOTD. I love getting dressed up and putting outfits together.

5. Motivational quotes
I enjoy reading all of the workout/fitness motivational quotes on Pinterest. Here is one I found this week.

July 18, 2013

This week started off rough with training (not feeling well, slow runs) but has gotten a lot better over the last few days! Today was cross training. I worked this morning/early afternoon and then debated whether to swim laps, do a Body Beast weight routine, or go to a gym class. I finally decided a gym class called F.I.T.

Functional Integrated Training
"Challenge yourself beyond traditional strength training with this advanced, total body functional strength training class. We will challenge your muscular endurance as well as balance and coordination by moving through all planes of motion with multi-joint and compound exercises."

Usually we use a step and work on lunges, squats, knee ups, etc. with that but today's class was different in that we used a Bosu. It made it a little harder to do the lunges and squats since you have to work on balance but it strengthens core. At the end the instructor told our class that those who are running the Rock 'N' Roll marathon or half marathon in November should begin training this week. No no, training began three weeks ago.

^^ quick, smile for the blog! ^^

Also, my broken items are [almost] fixed. My sister and I went out to the mall yesterday to stop at the Apple store for our appointment. I got my new phone thanks to James and my warranty plan. What else to do with a new phone than take some pictures. My Garmin requires shipping the parts so I will be ordering that this weekend.
